CHARACTER DESIGN I

The fundamentals of character design with a concerted emphasis on concept development, appeal, construction, proportions, turn arounds, style, posing, attitude and expression models and the development of basic drawing skills.

CHARACTER DESIGN II

Continued studies in the art of character design with a focus upon adapting the human figure to animation. Requires the completion of Character Design I

CHARACTER DESIGN III

Exercises in advanced character design theory through animal anatomy, variations in style, and an emphasis on 3d production design for characters. Requires the completion of character design II.

CHARACTER SCUPLTURE ( Not currently being offered )

The fundamentals of sculpting a three dimensional character from two dimensional model sheets. This course is integral to developing a sense of form necessary for successful character design. Students will sculpt characters of their own design as well as established characters.

BACKGROUND DESIGN

Studies in the fundamentals of background layout with an emphasis on perspective, composition, design, staging, mood, texture and lighting.

CHARACTER ANIMATION ( Not currently being offered )

A comprehensive study in the basic principles of animation and the application of those principles in bringing a character to life through the mechanics of motion. Areas of focus include squash and stretch, overlapping action, volume consistency, rhythms, lines of action and timing with a strong emphasis on basic drawing. The course continues with studies in acting, personality exposition and visual narratives.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

An introduction to visual development and production design with an emphasis on the development of fundamental rendering skills. Specific areas of study include the use of light and shadow upon form, control of gray scale values, tonal design, color theory basics, rendering techniques in a variety of mediums and the development of academic painting skills.

STORYSKETCH FUNDAMENTALS

The development of raw concepts into graphic narratives for production. Areas of concentration include concept development, storyboard mechanics, camera moves, hook-ups, composition, script analysis, staging, continuity and animatics.

BEGINNING PHOTOSHOP ( Not currently being offered )

An introduction to digital color and design in Photoshop with an emphasis on basic tools and functions of the program. Requires the completion of Visual Development and experience with Windows 2000.

FLASH ANIMATION ( Not currently being offered )

Flash is the standard for animation on the Internet and is emerging for film, video, and television. Requires the completion of Character Animation and experience with Windows 2000. Not a stand alone class. Part of our Character Animation Program.

TEEN PROGRAM

Comprehensive studies for teenagers in character design basics, perspective, rendering and concept development..

BUSINESS LAW FOR ARTISTS ( Not currently being offered )

An introduction to principles of law and negotiations for animation artists. Topics will include copyrights, contracts and general business law.

CHARLES ZEMBILLAS

is the founder of The Animation Academy. He is an independent character designer, animator, art director, producer, and is a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. He is renowned for designing Sony's Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon and the award-winning Jak and Daxter video game characters.

JOSE LOPEZ

is a founding father of The Animation Academy and a character designer on the upcoming series "The Batman" for Warner Bros. TV Animation.

JOHN NEVAREZ

is a storyboard and visual development artist for Disney TV Animation.

WALTER GATUS

is a character designer for Warner Bros Animation.

THOMAS PERKINS

is a character designer on the upcoming series "The Batman" for Warner Bros. TV Animation.

ALAN SIMMONS

is a veteran of the "Batman", "Superman" and "Batman Beyond" series as well as "X-Men Evolution" at Film Roman Studios.

CHRIS COLLINS

is a founding father of The Animation Academy and is currently in production at Disney TV Animation.

ROBERT GOLD

is formerly of the United States Navy. He is an ace of the academy and an experienced background design instructor with our Teen Progam.

KELSEY MANN

is a director for Cartoon Network.

CHANCE RASPBERRY

is an Ace of The Academy and a veteran of several independent projects produced at the school. He is currently working as a character layout artist on "The Simpsons".

TIM WOLLWEBER

is a sculptor and designer for Disney Entertainment Productions. He works on concepts for shows, parades, and attractions for Disneyland.

GARY CLAIR

is the lead conceptual artist and storyboard artist at Threshold Entertainment. He also designs for Raptisoft and Popcap Games.

 

ARASH TIGARI

is an Ace of The Academy and is a veteran of numerous independent animated projects produced at the school. He is currently working as a visual effects artist at Rhythm and Hues.

STEPHEN SILVER

is the lead character designer of Disney's "Kim Possible" and Nickelodeon's "Danny Phantom"and upcoming "Crash Nebula".

KRISTEN SYCH

is a character animator with Activision and has with 13 years professional experience in theatrical shorts, television, video, commercial, interactive software and the Internet and is destined to lead a mass migration of interstellar colonists.

DEVON MARTIN

is a character artist for Disney Consumer Products.

AARON HORVATH

is designing and animating with Comedy Central.

LAWRENCE JACKSON

is the founder of Kick Interactive and a veteran of educational CD-ROM production. He specializes in high-end web design applications.

JEAN WRIGHT

is reknowned for her animation writing seminars in the LA area. She's a member of the Writers Guild of America, the Academy of Televison Arts and Sciences and an Emmy Award judge.

LARISSA MARANTZ

is a founding mother of the Animation Academy. She is a veteran character designer of "The Rugrats" television series.

ALEX MADRIGAL

is an Ace of the Academy and an experienced character design instructor with our Teen Program.

GARY MONTALBANO

is a premiere independant conceptual designer who has worked with many of the major animation and live action studios in the entertainment industry. He is a publisher of his own line of fine art prints and also works as an illustrator in print media.

is a production manager formerly with Disney Interactive.

SERAPIO CALM

is a character designer for Cartoon Network.

RICHARD CHAVEZ

is among the industry's most prolific production designers. He was an Art Director on "The Prince of Egypt," production designer on "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron," Disney's upcoming "Brother Bear," and is currently head of Visual Development.at Sony Imageworks.

is a Photshop artist formerly with Red Star Comics.

is an attorney with 20 years experience with copyrights and contract negotiations for major art publishers and studios. He is a graduate of U.C. Riverside cum laude,Southwestern School of Law and he is a diplomate of The American Trial Lawyers College.
